How to Take a Great Headshot: 7 Tips From a Professional Photographer

By Published On: April 9th, 2025

Professional headshots are a powerful way to market yourself, but let’s be honest — posing for headshots feels anything but natural. Even with the best intentions, it’s easy to feel awkward or unsure in front of the camera.

So, how do you get a photo that feels like you while looking confident, polished, and approachable?

As a headshot photographer, I’ve guided hundreds of clients through this exact process. These seven simple headshot tips will help you walk into your session feeling prepared — and walk out with images you’re proud to share.

1. Dress the part

It may seem like a no-brainer, but when it comes to deciding what to wear for your headshot session, you want to look polished and professional.

But what does that mean exactly?

What you wear in your headshot says a lot before you even speak. As a professional photographer, I always tell my clients, “Dress like the best version of yourself — the version you want your audience or future employer to meet.”

Start with something polished and well-fitted. Choose solid colors or subtle textures that complement your skin tone without overwhelming the shot. Avoid loud patterns, logos, or anything overly trendy, as they distract from your face (which should always be the focus).

When planning your outfit, consider the purpose of the headshot. Are you updating your LinkedIn? Aiming for a clean, corporate vibe? Or is this a creative brand refresh? Your clothing should match the tone of your industry while still reflecting your personality.

Comfort is as important as style. If you’re uncomfortable — whether it’s because your outfit is too tight, too hot, or simply not “you” — it will show in your expression and posture. So skip anything restrictive (goodbye SPANX or sky-high stilettos unless that’s your M.O.), and opt for something you feel good moving and sitting in.

Bonus headshot tip: If you’re unsure, bring an extra outfit or two. This gives your photographer options and helps you feel more confident knowing you have backups.

Whether you’re dressing for a business look or a personal brand statement, your outfit sets the tone for the look of your shots — and makes posing for headshots feel a whole lot easier.

2. Posing for headshots

One of the biggest worries people have is not knowing how to pose. The truth is, you don’t need to be a model — with a few simple tips and a little guidance from your headshot photographer, you’ll look natural.

Start with good posture. Keep your back straight, shoulders relaxed, and head slightly forward and down to create a nice, defined jawline. It may feel strange, but it looks great on camera.

One of my go-to headshot tips is to take a “reset” moment. Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths, and relax your face. This helps release tension and makes your expression look more natural.

If there are specific poses you’ve seen and want to emulate, bring in example images of what you are hoping to accomplish with the look of your images.

If you’re unsure about posing for headshots, don’t stress. A good professional photographer will guide you through it so you feel confident and look like your best self.

3. Choosing the right photographer

Picking the right headshot photographer makes a difference in how confident and comfortable you’ll feel during your session — and in the final results.

Look for someone with experience, specifically in posing for headshots and professional lighting. A good professional photographer will know how to guide you through the process and capture your best angles.

Do a little research: check their portfolio, read reviews, and don’t be afraid to ask for referrals. Most importantly, choose someone whose style you connect with — and who makes you feel at ease.

4. What to bring to your photoshoot

Before you walk out the door, be sure you’ve packed everything you need for a successful session.

Here’s a quick list of what to bring:

  • A comb or brush for fixing flyaways
  • Makeup for light touch-ups (especially powder or concealer)
  • A small cloth or blotting paper to dab away sweat or shine
  • Deodorant for a quick freshen-up
  • 1–2 outfit options for variety (layers and solid colors work best)
  • Sample photos if you have a specific style or poses in mind
  • Water and a light snack to keep your energy up (a little chocolate can go a long way)

Having these items on hand helps you stay relaxed and feel prepared, so you’re ready to shine in front of the camera.

5. After the shoot

Once your session is complete, many headshot photographers will let you review the images and pick your favorites. It can be hard to choose — we tend to be our own toughest critics — so don’t be afraid to ask trusted friends, family, or colleagues for input.

Look for images that reflect your personality, and features. Your headshot photographer can also help you narrow down your options and fine-tune the final edits so you end up with images you love.

6. Where to use your headshots

Once you have your edited headshots, you can use them for your website, company directory, resume, social media profiles, speaking engagements, networking events, or anywhere else you need to represent your personal brand.

7. Update your headshots regularly

Your headshot should reflect the current you, not who you were five years ago. A good rule of thumb is to refresh it every few years or anytime you make a major change in your look, career, or brand.

Actor headshots, for example, are recommended every one to two years according to Backstage.com.

If you’re actively building your online presence or personal brand, even more frequent updates help keep things fresh.

Regular updates show you’re polished, present, and actively engaged in your professional growth.
